If you haven't been to this marvelous restaurant then simply put GO...GO NOW!!!! If you haven't been there recently then shame on you. Go again. This restaurant is a true gem and we are lucky to have it here in Ossining. The owners are simply fantastic people who love what they do and their customers. If I lived closer than 2 hours away, I'd be there weekly. No shortcuts. Great food masterfully crafted and cooked by Rolph. His terrific wife Verena is a true hostess with the mostess. Again...go...if you have never been GO! If you have gone then go again. We can't afford to lose this true gem of a restaurant.

This time I had the Jaegerschnitzel which was pork in a red wine sauce and homemade noodle. The plate came w/fresh seasonal vegetable melody pickled red cabbage. The food was delicious. My favorite dish is the breaded veal w/cream mushroom sauce. Make sure you always end with the chocolate moose. It's a great place to eat and hold a conversation. It's no place to take a first but you can catch with a old Friend

I have eaten at this, what I refer to as, one of the few, "Westchester's-Secret Greatest Restaurants", since the lovely couple who own, run, cook and most certainly design both menu and atmosphere, first opened many years ago. They are a couple, who have their hands in every aspect of this hidden wonder! Okay, their business hasn't always attracted huge crowds, and they can sometimes be a bit tardy, as far as opening time, but I challenge anyone; who knows anything, about excellent cuisine, from any country, to find a better, or more attention-giving, or caring chef and wife team, within our counties limits! I dream of the ecstatic experiences I've been blessed to have, with romantic partners, as well as rowdy groups of appreciative friends. Management is so accommodating, that there have been lively debates about whether to leave, or implore the lovely owners to allow us to remain in our "enlightened, near, fuug-state", until the morning! I must admit from time to time, I have wished; on one hand, that 'Brasserie Swiss", could enjoy general popularity, along with the financial success, naturally included, which would necessarily follow. This success is exactly the what they so deserve! I've spent years worrying about their fiscal health, my heart would break, should this "wonder", succumb to the strains of financial pressures, and be lost to us. On the other hand, I must confess, there are also times, (when I feel slightly, 'dog-in-the-manger-esq'), that I feel "BS"'s, exclusiveness is perhaps, an integral part of the restaurants', "terribly- charming" and intimate essence. I also fear, unreasonably, I admit, that the historical lack of popularity of Brasserie Swiss, might also be another, concrete reason, for it's; very-nearly, perfectly-honed, seasonings; as well as their unwaveringly authentic presentation of Germanic-European dishes. In Westchester County, for the most part, the crafting and finishing of such professionally crafted and specialized cuisine, sadly remains relatively unknown. At the very least, offerings such as those of Brasserie Swiss', have been mostly untried; anywhere within a great many miles of this literal "jewel" of a restaurant, so innocently stationed atop a slope; where once upon a time, a favorite pizzeria of most locals, who came, religiously, for their 'family-night-out', during the sixties and seventies, perhaps even before those decades; when I was aware of it! It was known as our FAMILY PLACE, which had disappeared, replaced by a succession of other "ethnic style", spots, until the advent of Brasserie Swiss, sometime during the eighties, if I recall correctly. It could possibly have been the nineties. I must end this epic review! I simply, or not so simply, felt a heavy pull, to try to tell the readers of these reviews the story I've had the desire to reveal about Brasserie Swiss, for the longest time! I love this place, and I finally must be strong, and if necessary, share it's story with more people who shall find true heaven, when finally having motivation enough to go there, try this awesome, uniquely perfected cuisine! I must stop being selfish about this repast directly from Heaven! So here you are, finally with a more than mediocre reason to believe me, I stand by Brasserie Swiss, of course, their food, and on an extremely personal level, I've left out the information about the, "to die for ", imported from Germany, I think, most fantastical china, which, if I could ever have been able to take a set home, I believe that I could have died a happy death, to have been able to have called them 'mine'! I have dreamed of them, as well as the menu, for the decades since I first discovered, Brasserie Swiss, on that little slope, on Route 133, in the quaint village of Ossining, NY! I hope you have a wonderful experience! Please forgive me any typos! "K"

Been there ALOT. NEVER had a bad meal. Absolutely one of my top restaurants! The owner and his wife are Soo sweet and charming. The food is always delicious. Gorgeous inside, very rustic and warm. I cannot see someone who has taste buds eat there and not be pleased!

It would be great if I could give this 0 stars instead of 1. The servers ignored us most of the time despite the restaurant being nearly empty (7:00 on a friday) it they took our order quickly, but it took 35 minutes to get our salad apps which were tiny, bland, and wet. It took another 30 minutes to get the food. The food was bland and flat, like airplane or cafeiteria food, and OUTRAGEOUSLY overpriced. It was $87 for 3 people, and ee only had 3 entrees and one soup. This place is completely off our list.

A solid 3.5 but I'm rounding up because it's not often you find a true mom and pop place anymore. German food is hard to come by in this part of the Hudson Valley and we were out and there was a Groupon and the rest was history. My parents used to take us to eat cheap German food all the time growing up so it's actually a flavor I've missed and we were excited to try Brasserie Swiss. Inside the restaurant is charming. It looks frozen in time with wood paneling and aged lace curtains and all sorts of Swiss German looking art all over the place. I do think that's part of the charm though. That and awesome company for a good meal. The salads to start with are actually delicious. Great dressing, beets, delicious. Dad and I ordered the Roestizza Bernese which is roesti topped with diced sausage, apples, onions and a tomato sauce and then covered in mozzarella cheese. It's kind of like a mess on a plate but it tastes good. There were too many onions for my liking but it all seemed to go together, potatoes go with sausage, cheese goes with sausage, apples go with sausage so just put it all together and you've got an interesting little dish. Mom ordered the breast of capon which was covered in mushrooms and asparagus and a Swiss cheese sauce (go figure in a Swiss German restaurant) which was quite juicy and incredibly flavorful. Definitely a hit. We also ordered wienerschnitzel with roesti for the table which was by and far the highlight of the meal for me. That was the awesome traditional taste I was looking for. The little one had a red lentil soup and some roesti and sausage and loved all of it. Dessert for dad was carrot cake which he seemed to like judging from the fact that it was gone in a few seconds. Myself, mom and the little one each had chocolate mousse. This was a proper, light chocolate mousse, not marshmallow tasting or fake and it even had little specks of shaved chocolate in it. However there's an added ingredient that nobody knows about until they eat it - some type of alcohol. This would have been awesome to know before the little one dug into it and was even encouraged to continue eating it (not by us) but it made for a super fun and giggle filled tiny dining companion. An experience I don't necessarily want to repeat. Everything was good though, definitely fresh and made to order. A half of a star down for the little alcohol mix up in the dessert (although it is very good for adults) and a full star down because the prices on the dinner menu are slightly higher than what I'm used to for German food. Maybe Swiss German is different, who knows? Maybe I'm just stuck in twenty years ago. I'll definitely be back but probably for lunch, dishes run about $10 cheaper then.

We have eaten at Brasserie Swiss for more than a decade, and we find both the food and the service to be consistently excellent. There is nothing trendy about it, nothing flashy. Just terrific food and an unabashedly homey Swiss atmosphere. Family favorites include the rosti, the raclette, the fondue, and the choucroute. But, after more than a dozen visits, I really can't recall a bad meal.

My veal cutlet was microwaved... It was nuclear hot for about 8 minutes after being served. I cook my own cutlets I know what fresh cooked cutlets are like. Veal is expensive so I was pissed. It was super tough also I am guessing because it was from another day then microwaved. Also their was only one other table so the chef couldn't be bothered to actually cook my food when they aren't busy, pretty sure the guy drinking at the bar talking on his phone was the chef because he disappeared into the kitchen soon before our food was ready. Another person ordered the sour braten because they love that dish he didn't like it I didn't like it another person didn't like it we are all open minded with food we eat everything it was just bad the lady said it is supposed to taste that way but it was so salty and super sour like way to sour. Got no apologies for the bad food just payed for our food and left. If you are having a slow night maybe you should like put in some effort with the customers you actually do have.

Most of the time, my first impression of a restaurant will not be "cute," but Brasserie Swiss is certainly an exception. I was greeted a warm and friendly woman, who is co-owner of the restaurant and works with her husband to keep the kitchen running every day. Between the two of them milling about the dining room and talking to patrons, and the decor that made me feel like I was in a Swiss ski chalet, I felt like I was at home. Switzerland is a unique place in that depending on the region of Switzerland you travel to, the culture, people, and food are quite different. The food at Brasserie Swiss is most similar to Swiss-German food and do not let the location fool you: the roesti, schnitzel, and other classics are every bit authentic. To start, Sam M. (a new Yelper!) and I both had small mixed salads. I'm glad that we went light for an appetizer because the main dishes are extremely substantial. I ordered the roast duckling - not only did I get a decent portion of duck, but dinner came with a side of vegetables, spatzli (it's very similar to gnocchi), roasted cabbage, and applering. We were too full to order individual desserts, so we shared the chocolate mousse. It was light, fluffy, and even had little bits of chocolate mixed in as well. This particular dessert was not as heavy as the typical chocolate mousse, which made me happy that I was able to enjoy more than two bites of it. After we finished with dinner, no one was looking to rush us out of the restaurant; we were allowed to stay for as long as we liked. Now that we know this place exists, Sam and I will be back for some fondue!

What a great experience at a hidden gem. Everything from the warm service to the tasty meal. We started out with the snails and cauliflower soup. Both were excellent. I'm not a huge cauliflower person, my boyfriend is, but it was truly delicious. The snails were magnificent. Different than how I have ever had them but their sauce was so good I had to sop it up with my bread. I got the jaegerschnitzel as my main course. So worth it. A mushroom sauce is such a plus and the pork was so tender. It was such a big dish but I ate the whole thing. My boyfriend got the sauerkraut sausage which was right up his alley. So many different options here. I want to go back and try them all!! Also you get a complimentary salad that us really a treat all on its own. Dessert was carrot cake and again made the night a real treat. The waitress is the hostess and she is a doll. Great to hear about Swiss culture. If you've never had Swiss, now's the time!!

Arrived on the late side, only a couple of people remaining in dining room. Would describe the room as quaint, European tidy. I was graciously assured that I had plenty of time to eat. Food was delicious, couldn't believe I finished app, salad and main but it was so good. I was unrushed. Owners are very engaging and are truly concerned that you are enjoying your food. Yes a bit older style but good food, service and hospitality that is mostly lacking in the trendier places. Will be back soon.

One of my top 5 Westchester restaurants - The food, the service, and the decor are all perfect. Period. End of story. (You're still here...it's over...go home...go...) If you still need further explanation or convincing...We started with the Snails Bourguignon, Raclette Valeisanne, and Bratwurst with Roesti. We continued with complementary salads and then ended with the Cheese Fondue for two and the Bratwurst with Roesti. All were perfect. The service was wonderful - this truly is a mom and pop restaurant and the owner/host/waitress was charming, helpful, and attentive. And the decor and atmosphere made us feel welcome and delighted. My only caveat is that this is not 'light' food in any sense - full on fat, full on calories, full on flavor. Be forewarned. Lastly, I don't know what to say about an earlier poster's experience with children other to say that our experience was the exact opposite. We went as a family of four (kid's aged 10 and 8) to celebrate our daughter's birthday and arrived when they opened for dinner (5:30PM). Our kids were certainly a bit louder and more boisterous than I would have liked...but not to the level of disturbing other patrons.

Not sure what we were expecting, its a pretty non-descript building from the outside. On the inside it takes a few minutes to adjust, thinking at first its cramped and run down you quickly learn thats its very nicely appointed. Very clean, well decorated albeit maybe a bit dated. The feel makes me think maybe this is what a little Brasserie would be like in a similarly small town in the Alps. Anyways, we were kindly greeted when we entered by who we think was the chef owner, then seated by a nice polite woman. The place was very empty (but it was tuesday evening) it was a quite place, nice background music. We ordered the cheese croquettes as an app and they were good. For our entree we both had daily board specials, one was JagerSchnitzel which is pork cutlet in wine sauce with Spaatzle and the other was something I can t prounce but I think was veal tips in a cream/mushroom/lemon suace with a potato cake. Both were delicious. We also had a delicious small house salad which had some grated beets and a fantastic vinaigrette. Of course drinks were easy to select, they had a complete bar for almost everything including daily special martini's but we picked 2 beers, 1 local Capt Lawerence and another German Oktoberfest, no room for desert , but we definitely plan to go back to try some fondue

Nothing special. I am a vegetarian, so the menu was extremely limited for me. I requested to just get the spatzli with vegetables and a cream sauce, and what I got was a plate of cooked veggies with a side of noodles. For $20. And it wasn't even that good. Definitely not worth it. I was bummed because I heard good reviews, but definitely disappointed. I will not go back.

This homey Swiss restaurant is now in its 30th year in Ossining. It's basically a two person husband and wife show here, with the husband in the kitchen and the wife serving as hostess and waitress. We were the only people there for an early Sunday evening dinner. For appetizers, we shared garlic sausage (on buttered toast, served with grey poupon) and raclette valeisanne (potatoes smothered in melted cheese). The portions were a little small, so order more apps if you have a crowd. For our main dishes, my mom and I shared the fondue for 2 (this would serve at least 4 as an appetizer-- it was a HUGE pot of bubbling cheese with crusty bread and apples), and my dad had the jagerschnitzel, a special pork dish with red wine sauce, beets, and spatzle (the Swiss version of pasta, kind of the consistency of gnocchi without the potato), and C had the choucroute garnie, pork loin and two kinds of sausage atop a bed of sauerkraut with a side of hash brown style potatoes. Brasserie Swiss is not cheap (entrees in the $20s, fondue in the $40s), but if this is the price for home-cooked Swiss food, then so be it. Everything was cooked to order and, it was obvious, with love for the food. They even brought out our apple strudel with a candle for my dad and sang Happy Birthday, accompanied by the clangs of a huge Swiss cow bell, which we got a huge kick out of. I can't see getting a specific craving for this food, but I would go back just for the cheese fondue and to sample the chocolate fondue as well!

It was my first time ever having swiss cuisine and boy did I love it! There was soo many things to choose from and they even made some provisions for me since I am allergic to shellfish. My only issue was the wait but the food was well worth it!

I can't say that I would often walk into a restaurant and think, "wow, this place is a time-warp," but there you have it. That's Brasserie Swiss. It's a total time-warp. It's adorable. It's also patently absurd (in all the best ways). Décor is precisely what it would be if your grandmother designed a restaurant in 1975 and wanted it to look homey. I had the jägerschnitzel and it was incredible. It was more food that was strictly healthy or wise for me to eat, but it was delicious, so I disregarded prudence and chowed down. I can food-snob it with the best of them, but I know when to appreciate patently delicious comfort food, too. The meal I was served was flawless. It was tasty, filling, saucy and completely luxurious. They had Captain Lawrence IPA on tap, too. There's not really much more I can say without just talking to hear my own voice. Brasserie Swiss is stellar. Go and love it.

(My Husband wrote this. I've been there a couple of times and what he is saying is TRUE) I've been going to this place periodically all my life and I've gotten the same dish every time - chicken belzano. Its the best! The couple who runs it is great, very friendly, genuinely nice people.

Love the decor in this restaurant; it does seem a bit frozen in time, but in the best possible way. It's very cozy and a great place to go for a drink when it's chilly outside. The food was great. I had the Weinerschnitzel and I loved the pickled cabbage accompaniment. Prices are not exactly reasonable but they do offer food not otherwise easily found in Westchester. The wife and owner was gracious and friendly. I'd like to return to sample the fondue. This place has been around for 20+ years, so they must be doing something right!

My first impression eating Swiss food was "salty." The service and hospitality was exceptional. The beer was outstanding but I suppose Swiss food is a little too salty for my taste. I would go back and try other dishes. Everyone in there is extremely nice, which makes it even harder to give them only 3 stars. There was a desert with cherries (cannot remember the name of it) that was pretty damn good though.

My family and I had dinner there last night (12/7/11). We loved it! The decor is very charming (if a little old-fashioned) and the food was outstanding! We shared the cheese fondue, the Rahmschnitzel and the Jaegerschnitzel. We loved every bite. I especially liked the the mustard dressing on the salad. The service was polite but not intrusive. We had our children (ages 9 & 7) with us and had no problems - the restaurant seems perfectly child-friendly (responding to some earlier posts). All in all I would say this is a great little gem of a restaurant!!

Consistently good food. Particularly nice in the cold weather for a hearty meal - and the great Christmas decorations. Fresh ingredients, and all freshly cooked. Nice couple run the place.

After having driven past numerous times, my boyfriend and I finally had an opportunity to check this place out. The interior can best be described as quaint. It has an old-fashioned feel to it, and I'm pretty sure the interior hasn't changed at all since they opened 30 years ago. They serve what I can best describe as homestyle Swiss food. We were seated, had our drink orders taken. When we had our drinks, we were given a menu and, shortly after, a bread basket arrived, with warm rolls and some other bread items. Besides the menu there's also a specials list. Once we ordered, we received our side salads. I ordered a Wiener Schnitzel, and my boyfriend had the Jäger schnitzel from the specials board. The food took a while to arrive, but it wasn't an unpleasantly long wait, and mostly this was just due to the food being prepared fresh and to order, like you'd hope. Certainly you will not go hungry after eating here. The portions are large. Mine left me comfortably full, my boyfriend's portion was even larger than mine, and he was completely stuffed when he was done. My not being stuffed meant that I had dessert: Apple Strüdel. Well worth it. Yummy! Service was attentive and friendly. We had a waitress and the Swiss co-owner/hostess also tended to us. Both made polite conversation. At the end of the meal there was also no rush to get us out of the place either, which was nice. I only really wish that they were a little cheaper. Entrées are mostly in the mid-$20s up to about $30. Desserts around $6. However, the food was excellent, and the portions very generous, so it was certainly worth it. Another review mentioned a bad experience with kids. While mine were not with me at this visit, and so I have no personal experience to relate, I will say that this doesn't exactly strike me as the place to take kids. It has a more quiet-dinner fine-dining vibe. It's not as dressy as what you'd think for a fine dining experience, but it just seems more that kind of atmosphere than a kid oriented family restaurant.

We had our wedding rehearsal dinner at the Brasserie S. and returned last weekend for a 31st anniversary dinner. We were happy to discover that nothing had changed: not the warm, cozy setting, not the attentive hospitality from Verena and Rolf (Baumgartner, the owners), and best of all, not the food. I had been dreaming of Rolf's perfect calf liver's in bacon with rösti and was not disappointed. Tender and bursting with flavor as always. My husband and daughter had sauerbraten and schnitzel respectively and ate every last morsel. For desserts we had the coupe cherry Swiss (macerated cherries with ice cream), Swiss frozen iced coffee, and chocolate mousse--all delectable. Entrees come with a mixed salad that has tender, slightly sweet red beets in it, another delectable treat. The Baumgartners created Brasserie Swiss out of a former take-out pizza joint, so on the outside it's a little unprepossessing. Don't let that fool you! You're in for a real dining treat!

I've eaten here a few times and have never been disappointed. Their salad dressing is really unusual in the best possible way! They have wonderful fondue, and a great variety of traditional Swiss main courses. The owners are very friendly, and the food is consistently delicious. I'm not too crazy about the dessert selections, and I think the only thing I was ever disappointed in while dining there was the wine.

Finally stopped for dinner and was very pleased. I had Jagerschnitzel which was very tender served with tasty spaetzle (tiny dumplings) and delicious red cabbage and mixed vegetables . Entrees also include greens salad. Portions are ample and the service was smooth and relaxed. Good wine list and house wine liter and half carafes are fine and inexpensive. Other in my party had salmon with salads which was also very good and also from the specials board which has the best values. Will definitely return again

I've been here twice - and the food was fabulous both times. The first time I did the fondue - very expensive, but absolutely fabulous. The second time I did a regular dinner - shared an appetizer of snails - the best that I have ever had. Had weiner schnitzel (I'm sure this is spelled wrong) and it was wonderful. It was accompanied by a salad, veggies and potatoes and everything was fabulous. I was absolutely stuffed - you definitely do not need to have an appetizer here, the dinner is more than enough. We shared a dessert - no real room to eat, but couldn't resist - sour cherries over cream - Yum!!! The service is fabulous, and the decor is what you would get in a Swiss country restaurant about 25 years ago (the last time I was in Switzerland). You should definitely make a reservation because it is small, but that makes it all the more lovely an experience.

I really wanted to like this restaurant. I took my Swiss au pair and my two children there for a birthday dinner last night. The woman who owns it/waitress must have been in a really grouchy mood or simply does not like children. She was so nasty to my son (7 years old) when he asked for more bread--she practically screamed at him that he was being rude and told him to put his napkin in his lap. She didn't crack a smile throughout the whole dinner, even when my 9-year-old daughter asked her a friendly question about the pictures that were hanging on the wall. I had made a reservation earlier in the day and told her we were coming with a Swiss girl for her birthday dinner. Sadly, she did absolutely nothing to make it special. In fact, our au pair (who just turned 20 years old) ordered a Fanta orange soda and she brought her a glass of white wine. And our au pair was speaking to her in Swiss German! What a disaster. When our au pair brought the mistake to her attention, she simply said, we don't have Fanta and she didn't take the untouched wine off the bill. The steak my son and I shared was quite tasty, with a nice brown gravy and mushrooms and side of vegetables, but everything was very salty. The $40 fondue was nothing special at all: all you get with it is cut-up apples and a pile of bread cubes. It also didn't help that when she put the forks down for the fondue she made of point of being very nasty about not giving one to my son. I feel completely ripped off and very upset at such a negative experience. I really didn't want to leave any tip but I did. I wish now that when she was so mean to my son, I had gotten up and walked out. Given all these positive reviews here (and the review in the NYT from a few years ago), I can only conclude that she was having a very bad day and/or hates children. My suggestion is never to go here for a family dinner. Also, we were the only people in the restarant on Tuesday night. One couple showed up as we were half-way through our dinner.

Brasserie Swiss 118 Croton Ave Ossining, NY 10562 (914) 941-0319 If you are in search of some very authentic Swiss Fare, look no further. Quite simply put, the Brasserie Swiss Restaurant in Ossining, NY has been a well kept secret for much too long. Well I'm sorry folks, but I am just going to have to "let the cat out of the bag"! This place is superb. It rivals my grandmother's best dishes. The establishment's owners "The Baumgartner's" Rolf (the chef) and Verena (his wife & your hostess) will see to it that your dining experience is second to none. All I can say is that they are two of the nicest, most sincere people you'll ever meet. This is genuine Swiss Cuisine as its finest, bar none. My wife and I just love the Authentic Swiss Cheese Fondue for two and the Wiener Schnitzel is shamefully delicious. The beer, wine and spirits selection is better than any of the other Swiss places I've been to in and around New York City. The ambiance, décor and atmosphere, throws you right back into old Zurich. We will definitely continue to take friends, family and business acquaintances there a lot more often from now on. As for me, if I am not there at least once per week, I will surely go through withdrawal... And I just can't bear the pain. Hope to see you all there too!

My meal was mediocre and not very memorable. The Raclette Valeisanne was ok. Bland boiled potato topped with melted cheese. We had some kind of schnitzel, some very al dente spaetzel and what appears to be home made sauerkraut. I can't even remember what our other entree was...sausage I think. I expected more for the price, but it wasn't terrible.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
